What is botox

  • What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is a highly purified preparation of botulinum toxin A that is injected into facial muscles to soften wrinkles and lines. It is most often used on forehead lines, crow's feet (lines around the eye), and frown lines.

The treatment can also be used for brow lift.

  • How does BOTOX® work?

It works by temporarily blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the muscles which cause wrinkles and lines allowing them to relax. Normal facial expressions are unaffected. Wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity will not respond to BOTOX®.

  • When will I see results from a BOTOX® treatment?

Generally, the initial effect is seen within 3 days and the maximum effect is seen 7 days after treatment. This lasts approximately 3-4 months. Individual results may vary.

  • How long does BOTOX® last?

Visible results have been shown to last up to 4 months. Individual results may vary. Be sure to talk to your doctor about what you can expect and when to schedule your next appointment. Regular maintenance treatment prevents recurrence.

  • Is treatment with BOTOX® painful?

Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Prior to injection, your physician may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. Most patients are in and out of the physician’s office without downtime following BOTOX® treatment.

  • Will I still be able to make facial expressions?

Although the results are visible, a treatment with BOTOX® will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you’ve “had work done”. The muscle activity that causes wrinkles and lines is temporarily reduced, so you can still make facial expressions but without the wrinkles.

  • Who should not receive BOTOX®?

Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a neurological disease should not use BOTOX®. Certain antibiotics and other drugs that interfere with the transmission of nerve impulses to the muscles should not be taken when BOTOX® is used. Since BOTOX® doesn't work for all wrinkles, a consultation with a doctor is recommended.

  • What are the side effects of BOTOX®?

Side effects are uncommon. There may be some mild redness of the skin from the injection; this usually lasts only one or two hours. Minimal bruising may also occur. Headaches, which resolve in 24-48 hours, can occur. Rarely, there may be temporary eyelid drooping and/or double vision if BOTOX® spreads unexpectedly to nearby muscles.

Complications in the hands of a trained and experienced doctor are very rare and all precautions are taken to minimise any risks.

  • What will happen if I choose not to continue treatments?

If you do not continue treatments, the wrinkles and lines will gradually return to the way they looked before treatment.
