Oculoplastic Surgeon

The doctor

Ioannis Mavrikakis is an award-winning oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital surgeon (oculoplastic surgeon) with international recognition. He plays an active and leading role in academia and training programs.

He has presented scientific papers, given lectures and run courses in many countries. He has written textbooks and has numerous publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Dr Mavrikakis is the President of the Hellenic Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (HSOPRS) – (2014-2020) and served as a Committee Member of the  European Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ESOPRS) (2014-2018).

His areas of expertise include eyelid diseases (entropion, ectropion, trichiasis, ptosis, eyelid tumors, facial palsy, blepharospasm, eyelid trauma), lacrimal diseases, orbital diseases (anophthalmic socket, thyroid eye disease,  orbital tumors, orbital inflammation, orbital fractures), and aesthetic ophthalmology, surgical and non surgical.

Conditions & Treatment

Eyelid Diseases, Lacrimal Diseases

Entropion

Entropion is a condition in which the margin of the lower eyelid is rolled inward towards the eye. As a result the eyelashes constantly rub against the cornea (the front ‘window’ of the eye).

Ectropion

Ectropion is a condition in which the lower eyelid is rolled out away from the eye, or is sagging away from the eye. Generally the condition is the result of tissue relaxation associated with aging.

Trichiasis

Trichiasis describes eyelashes that are misdirected towards the eye. Any chronic inflammatory condition of the eyelid e.g. blepharitis, may result in trichiasis.

Ptosis

Ptosis means drooping of the upper eyelid. The most common cause of ptosis in adults is the separation or stretching of the levator muscle tendon from the eyelid.

Eyelid tumors

Eyelid tumors appear as lumps or elevations of the skin or as nodules. The main goal in the evaluation of these lesions is to differentiate malignant from benign lesions.

Facial palsy

Facial palsy is paralysis of part of the face caused by a non-functioning facial nerve that controls the muscles, especially around the eye and mouth.

Watery eye

Epiphora is an overflow of tears onto the face. A clinical sign or condition that constitutes insufficient tear drainage from the eyes in that tears will drain down the face rather than through the nasolacrimal system.

Anophthalmic socket

Anophthalmic socket is an orbit not containing an eyeball, but with orbital soft tissues and eyelid structures. This condition is rarely congenital but usually is acquired. The most common cause of an anophthalmic socket is an enucleation of the globe.

Thyroid eye disease

The thyroid gland, located in the front of the neck, produces hormones that help regulate the metabolism of the body (the process in which the body transforms food into energy).

Orbital tumors

An orbital tumor refers to any tumor located in the bony socket located in the front of the skull. This socket is a complicated structure that contains the eye itself along with muscles, nerves...

Orbital inflammation

The spectrum of orbital inflammatory disease  ranges broadly from specific disease diagnoses to nonspecific inflammation. Orbital inflammatory disease may be secondary to an underlying systemic inflammatory disease...

Orbital fractures

The eye socket is a bony opening that surrounds and protects the eye. The rim of the socket is made of fairly thick bones, while the floor and inner wall of the socket is mostly paper thin.

What is an Oculoplastic Surgeon

Why seek the skills of an Οculoplastic Surgeon

Oculoplastic surgeons are ophthalmologists (eye doctors) who have specialised in eyelid and facial plastic surgery.

Oculoplastic surgeons are trained to do many different types of eyelid and facial surgery, ranging from simple eyelid malpositions to more complex reconstruction involving the eyelids and surrounding forehead, temporal and cheek areas.

They understand the delicate anatomy and function of the eyelids and their surrounding structures.

As well as the eyelids, they specialise in the lacrimal (tear) system, the orbit (bone cavity around the eye), adjacent periocular (around the eyes) and facial structures, and the forehead and cheeks.

Oculoplastic surgeons assess the surface health of the eyes and function of the eyelids prior to eyelid plastic surgery.

As dedicated eyelid plastic surgeons, an oculoplastic surgeon routinely does surgeries in these areas and recognises potential problems.

Oculoplastic surgeons are trained to manage the complications of eyelid and facial plastic surgery which can involve the eye itself.

Oculoplastic surgeons have professional societies which help them maintain a high standard of care.

The eyelid and other areas around the eye are delicate structures that need special understanding and care. Very often the problem at issue is not just cosmetic but interferes with visual function, comfort and well-being.

It therefore makes sense to entrust such work to a specialist who has completed years of additional training in plastic surgery as it relates to the eyes and their surrounding facial structures..

Oculoplastic surgeons are also known as ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgeons and oculo-facial surgeons.
