Ectropion

• What is an ectropion?

Ectropion is a condition in which the lower eyelid is rolled out away from the eye, or is sagging away from the eye.

• What causes ectropion?

Generally the condition is the result of tissue relaxation associated with aging, although it may also occur as a result of facial nerve paralysis, trauma, scarring, previous surgery or skin cancer.

• What are the symptoms of ectropion?

The symptoms depend on the degree of ectropion, and can include the following:

• Excessive tearing
• Chronic irritation
• Redness
• Pain
• Gritty feeling
• Crusting of eyelid and mucous discharge

• Can ectropion pose a risk to the eye and vision?

Rarely, untreated ectropion can lead to corneal exposure and corneal infection. This can then pose a risk to vision.

• Can ectropion be repaired?

Yes, ectropion can be repaired surgically. In most cases, Dr Mavrikakis will tighten the eyelid and its attachments, usually through a small incision at the outer corner of the eye, and will also re-attach the lower eyelid retractors internally (trans-conjunctivally). Occasionally, a skin graft may be required. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis, under local anesthesia. Patients recover quickly using an antibiotic ointment for about one week after surgery. Most patients experience immediate resolution of the problem following surgery.
